President Joe Biden announced that he is leaving the presidential race Sunday, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris for the Democratic nomination.
The decision came at the crescendo of calls for the President to bow out of the race after a poor debate performance and questions about his age that have rode his coattails throughout his presidency.
“I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden said in the statement.
The announcement makes Biden the first incumbent not to seek reelection since Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968.
