Tamayo Perry, a surfing star and actor from ‘Pirates of the Caribbean,’ died in a shark attack

A lifeguard and surf teacher, who acted in films such as Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Blue Crush, passed away on Sunday from a possible shark attack in Oahu’s North Shore, Hawaii, according to officials.

Tamayo Perry, 49, was a well-liked North Shore waterman and worked with Honolulu Ocean Safety for eight years, as mentioned by Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi.

“Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of one of our dedicated City and County of Honolulu lifeguards, who tragically lost his life today in an apparent shark attack on the North Shore. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and colleagues in Ocean Safety during this incredibly difficult time.”

Perry demonstrated courage, dedication, and a strong sense of responsibility, faithfully serving our community with resolute devotion. His brave deeds and relentless work to guarantee the well-being of our residents and visitors will always be remembered,” Blangiardi concluded.

The Honolulu Emergency Services Department released a statement indicating that a surfer had been fatally wounded in a shark attack near Goat Island on June 23, shortly before 1 p.m. local time.

The person who reached out to the emergency services informed them that the surfer displayed several bite wounds on their body.

Lifeguards utilized a Jet Ski to bring his body to shore, where EMS paramedics pronounced him deceased, according to authorities. Perry, the surfer, was positively identified by Ocean Safety.

Acting Chief Kurt Lager of Honolulu Ocean Safety announced during a media briefing. “Tamayo Perry was a lifeguard loved by all.”

Emilia Perry, a fellow surfer, commented about her spouse. “Tragic though his passing may be, he left this world doing what he loved, where he loved to do it.”

Perry was well-known for his mastery at Pipeline, one of the most famous surf breaks globally, found off Ehukai Beach Park on the north side of Oahu.

The Encyclopedia of Surfing mentions his close friendship with singer Jack Johnson and his upbringing on the east side of Oahu.

Perry and his partner operated a surfing academy jointly on the North Shore of Oahu.

Messages of sympathy came from surfers all around on Monday.

“Kelly Slater, a famous surfer, couldn’t believe this one! “Your truly lived the life you loved.”

We are really sorry for your loss. May he rest peacefully.
