The devastating fires in Los Angeles continue to cause fear and chaos. One person personally affected is Jamie Lee Curtis, 66.

During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday, January 8, the actress and producer grew very emotional as she spoke about the wildfire near her home.

People often have strong opinions about Hollywood and its stars, but we sometimes overlook the fact that these actors are just people, and Hollywood is their home.

The devastating wildfires in Los Angeles have brought fear and heartbreak to thousands, including actress Jamie Lee Curtis, 66, who found herself personally affected by the catastrophe.

Curtis had just boarded a flight to New York City for her scheduled appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon when she learned that the flames were rapidly approaching her home in Pacific Palisades.

Though she later confirmed her house had been spared, many of her neighbors lost everything as the fire tore through their community.

”I’m literally just about to cry”

Originally, Curtis was on The Tonight Show to promote her new film, The Last Showgirl, but before discussing the project, she became overwhelmed with emotion when the topic of the fires came up.

”I’m literally just about to cry. Mostly because of that beautiful welcome,” she began, reacting to the audience’s applause. One enthusiastic fan in the crowd even shouted, ”You’re beautiful!”

Through tears, she continued, ”As you know, where I live is on fire right now. Literally, the entire city of the Pacific Palisades is burning.”

She described the moment she realized the severity of the situation: “I flew here last night. I was on the plane, started getting texts. And it’s f**ing gnarly, you guys. It’s just a catastrophe in Southern California.”

Curtis expressed her heartbreak for those affected, adding, ”Obviously, there have been horrific fires in many places. This is literally where I live. Everything. The market I shop in. The schools my kids go to. Friends, many, many, many, many, many friends now have lost their homes.”

Made a heartfelt plea

With the weight of the devastation clear in her voice, she vowed to return to L.A. as soon as possible. ”So it is — it’s a really awful situation. I am, you know, obviously going to go home first thing tomorrow and be with my family and try to help my friends.”

Curtis then made a heartfelt plea to the audience, urging them to support the American Red Cross. ”If you know anybody on the West Coast or not, the American Red Cross, support them. They will come in and help people. Do anything you can. Anything in your community to help people, whether you need it or not now, you will need it. Give blood, donate, whatever.”

As an ambassador for the American Red Cross, Curtis also took the opportunity to stress the importance of being prepared. ”Have an emergency kit with prescription glasses, medicines, dog food, baby formula, all the things you need if you have to flee.”

She later shared a heartbreaking Instagram post showing the charred remains of her beloved church in Pacific Palisades. ”This is the church in the Palisades that had a beautiful Sunday school and school and was a gorgeous house of worship and is the building that I got sober in 25 years ago,” she wrote.

Reflecting on its significance, she added, ”I think of all of the souls who came there for comfort and solace and all the baptisms and funerals and weddings and the thousands of people who reclaimed their lives through sobriety.”

Wants to be with her family

Curtis, who shares two daughters—Ruby, 25, and Annie, 34—with her husband, screenwriter Christopher Guest, reiterated her determination to return home to be with her family and help those affected. ”It’s a really awful situation,” she said. ”I am going home tomorrow to be with my family and try to help my friends.”

You may find it hard to believe, how can a small set-top box (STB – Television signal decoder) consume more electricity than an air conditioner?

In fact, this is because the set-top box has a big hidden danger, which is a very high standby power source.

In other words, when we use the remote to switch off the television, the set-top box remains in standby mode and continues to waste electricity.

Furthermore, the power consumption of the set-top box in standby mode and normal operation is nearly identical, implying that if we do not turn off the switch after watching  TV every day, it is equal to leaving it on all the time.

The solution is very simple, you just need to turn off the switch on the TV set-top box, or buy a socket with a switch.

When we do not use household appliances, just turn off the power switch. This way, the power supply to the set-top box can be completely cut off, thereby saving a lot on the electricity bill.

He’d grit his teeth and mutter, “I’m not a child, Sarah.”

To which I’d reply, “Of course not, sweetie. Now, who wants to help make cookies?”

“Mark!” she bellowed, marching into the house. “Did you really make my sweeties sleep on the floor so you could play your little games?”

Mark looked like he wanted the floor to open up and swallow him whole. “Mom, it’s not… I mean, I didn’t…”

She turned to me, her face softening. “Sarah, dear, I’m so sorry you had to deal with this. I thought I raised him better than that.”

I patted her arm. “It’s not your fault, Linda. Some boys just take longer to grow up than others.”

Mark’s face was beet red. “Mom, please. I’m 35 years old!”

Linda ignored him, turning back to me. “Well, not to worry. I’ve cleared my schedule for the next week. I’ll whip this boy back into shape in no time!”

As Linda bustled off to the kitchen, muttering about the state of the dishes, I caught Mark’s eye. He looked utterly defeated.

“Sarah,” he said quietly. “I really am sorry. I was selfish and irresponsible. It won’t happen again.”

I softened a little. “I know, honey. But when I’m away, I need to know you’ve got things under control. The boys need a father, not another playmate.”

I smiled and gave him a quick kiss. “I know you will. Now, why don’t you go help your mother with the dishes? If you do a good job, maybe we can have ice cream for dessert.”

As Mark trudged off to the kitchen, I couldn’t help but feel a little smug. Lesson learned, I hoped. And if not… well, I still had that timeout corner ready and waiting.

Then he laughed and said that the last part was “just a joke.” He then paid for the music and picked the 1984 song by Lee Greenwood, “God Bless the USA.” As the song started up and the chorus roared through the bar’s speakers, every patron in the place started to sing along.

The bar tries to stand by the values listed in the song. That is why Victor Fiorillo noticed the sign emblazoned on the front of the building when he first walked in.

“If you’re not proud to be an American, do not bother to come in.”

The bar has been a staple in its Philadelphia neighborhood for decades. However, this sign is a new addition to the classic bar. They just want people to know that they’re about to be greeted with patriotic good cheer when they step inside.

The bar has even kept other classic elements from the Good Old Days – including cheap $1.50 pints of domestic beers. If it is a televised sporting event, you can land a beer for just a $1 – talk about a steal.

The bar is proud to be hipster-free. It attacks “real men,” and not yuppies and the working professionals who are quickly infiltrating the neighborhood and ruining everything in sight.

One Google review put it succinctly, “Not overrun with hipster douchebags. And even if you do see some hipster douche McDouchebags, they know to keep their abject stupidity to themselves.”

When a passerby noticed the sign on the door, they snapped a photo and posted it to a local Philly Facebook group. Outraged followed. People could not believe this bar was espousing such values.

Locals are even afraid of the bar if they are not white men. A woman from Fairmount knows about the bar nicknamed “Old Philly” and said she would not go because she has an Indian boyfriend with a beard.

“I would avoid going there,” she told Victor Fiorillo. “It’s usually fine. Sometimes, some places, it’s not fine. As is obvious from that sign.”

The bar manager doesn’t seem to get what all the fuss is about. As a bartender told Fiorillo, “If you’re in this county, you should be proud to be an American.”
