Amber Ruffin is speaking out after she was removed as the host of the upcoming 2025 White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
On the April 5 episode of CNN’s Have I Got News For You, Ruffin, 46, spoke about being “glad” that she’s no longer hosting the WHCD because she wanted to be able to express her political beliefs at the event.
“I lost the gig because I was out here talking s—,” the comedian said speaking to her fellow hosts Roy Wood Jr. and Michael Ian Black.
“And I think it’s a good thing that I lost the gig, because I was going to show up there and act all the way out,” she said, noting that at the time that she was hired to host she told the event’s organizers that she wouldn’t be holding back on her jokes and criticisms.
“It’s not anyone’s fault because when I was hired, we were like, ‘Oh, yeah, and we’ll give it to everybody,’ ” added Ruffin, a writer on Late Night with Seth Meyers. “Then, they started f—— disappearing people to a prison in El Salvador. They rolled back f—— civil rights. So I was, like, if I make this equal, then I’m also a piece of s—. I can’t f—— do that.”
The White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) announced the news that Ruffin would no longer be hosting the dinner in a statement to members on March 29 — soon after the comedian publicly joked about President Donald Trump’s policies.
“The WHCA board has unanimously decided we are no longer featuring a comedic performance this year,” WHCA President Eugene Daniels wrote in the announcement, which was shared two months after Ruffin was announced as host.
“At this consequential moment for journalism,” Daniels continued. “I want to ensure the focus is not on the politics of division but entirely on awarding our colleagues for their outstanding work and providing scholarship and mentorship to the next generation of journalists.”

The organization’s announcement came just one day after White House Deputy Chief of Staff Taylor Budowich criticized the Emmy-nominated comedian for her criticisms of the Trump administration.
On March 28, Budowich shared a post on X calling Ruffin “a 2nd rate comedian” alongside a clip of her discussing her thoughts about the upcoming dinner in a recent interview.
“What kind of responsible, sensible journalist would attend something like this?” Budowich wrote of her comments in the post. “More importantly, what kind of company would sponsor such as [sic] hate-filled and violence-inspiring event?”
In the clip, Ruffin said: “You’re kind of a bunch of murderers,” seemingly in reference to the current administration.
Ruffin also recalled a request to keep her speech at the event “equal,” to which she said, “There’s no way I’m going to be freaking doing that, dude. Under no circumstances.”
